Shure Advocates for UHF Spectrum Preservation at an EU regulators Workshop

On April 11, 2025, Shure took a prominent role at the RSPG (Radio Spectrum Policy Group) workshop titled “The Future of the 470–694 MHz Band within the EU”, held in Brussels. This pivotal event gathered regulators, industry leaders, and stakeholder associations from across the globe to discuss the long-term use and management of the UHF spectrum—an essential resource for a wide range of users, including the Program Making and Special Events (PMSE) sector.
Representing Shure at the event, Wolfgang Bilz participated in the afternoon roundtable session, where stakeholders from different sectors explored the critical question: “What if…?” The panel tackled the complex challenges of balancing competing demands for spectrum between mobile broadband, public broadcasting, PPDR (Public Protection and Disaster Relief), military applications, and the PMSE community.
Giving Voice to the Live Performance Industry
Shure’s participation reflects its long-standing commitment to preserving reliable access to spectrum for wireless microphones and in-ear monitor systems—tools that are vital for theater, live music, television, film, and cultural events. During the roundtable discussion, Bilz emphasized the necessity of continued access to the UHF band for PMSE applications, especially as demand for wireless audio technologies continues to rise in both scale and technical complexity.
With increasing pressure to reallocate spectrum to mobile services, Shure’s advocacy focused on ensuring that future policies reflect the economic and cultural importance of live productions, and the non-substitutable technical requirements of professional audio workflows.
A Collaborative Approach to Spectrum Policy
Earlier sessions of the workshop featured perspectives from EU regulators, the European Commission, and international representatives, including speakers from Spain, France, Sweden, the United Arab Emirates, and the UK. In the stakeholder-focused Session 3, associations such as the APWPT (representing PMSE), EBU (broadcasting), GSMA (mobile), NATO (military), and CRAF (radioastronomy) presented their visions for the future of the UHF band.
Shure’s contribution—delivered through its close collaboration with APWPT, the Wider Spectrum Group Coalition and direct involvement in regulatory forums—underscored the importance of inclusive policy-making that accounts for the diversity of spectrum users and the unique challenges of PMSE operations.
Shure’s Commitment to Spectrum Advocacy
Shure’s involvement in the RSPG hearing underscores its dedication to safeguarding the interests of the Program Making and Special Events (PMSE) community. Recognizing the increasing demand for wireless audio solutions and the growing scarcity of RF spectrum, Shure has taken proactive steps to ensure continued access to essential frequencies.
In early 2025, Shure established the Wireless Microphone Spectrum Alliance (WMSA), a coalition aimed at preserving RF spectrum for wireless microphone users across various industries. The alliance seeks to raise awareness, foster collaboration, and engage policymakers to advocate for sufficient spectrum allocations for current and future wireless microphone use.
Looking Ahead: Securing a Sustainable Future for Wireless Audio
The Brussels workshop marks a key milestone in the ongoing assessment by the RSPG, which will ultimately shape EU policy on the 470–694 MHz band post-2030. As regulators seek to balance innovation, public service, and economic growth, Shure remains steadfast in its mission: to protect the spectrum lifeline that enables Europe’s vibrant live performance and broadcast industries to thrive.
