What's New: MVX2U vs MVX2U Gen 2

  • Refreshed 2nd generation XLR to USB-C interface
  • Connect to more devices – computers, smartphones, tablets
  • Better control with the latest Shure digital audio processing
  • +60dB of gain is enough for an SM7B
  • +48v of phantom power for condensers

It was a tiny, handheld revolution when it arrived few years ago: The MVX2U Digital Audio Interface made it easy to plug your favorite XLR microphone into a computer via a standard USB-C connection. No longer did you have to leave your trusty SM7B at home when you went on the road!

Now Shure has taken a good thing and made it even better with the MVX2U Gen 2. The refreshed version builds on the original version by adding the latest digital audio processing and greater connectivity for mobile and tablet devices.

You can now easily record with an XLR microphone with just a smartphone or iPad. The interface equally compatible with both Android and Apple phones, as well as Windows or Mac computers.

Simply plug your favorite SM58 or other mic straight into the interface or use an XLR cable between the two for more range. The interface comes with an USB-C cable to connect to your recording device.

And since it uses power from USB you don’t need to worry about external batteries or AC adapters to get your audio rig up and running. Set up to record or go live in seconds from anywhere. It’s that easy!

But wait, I hear you say, does it really work with any XLR mic?

In fact, yes.

The MVX2U Gen 2 is great with dynamic microphones, since it provides +60dB of clean gain – that’s enough to drive even a gain-hungry SM7B with ease. However, the interface also has +48V of phantom power onboard to operate condenser mics.

(I’m not sure how many people are going to take their extremely fragile vintage ribbon mic on the road and plug it in via the MVX2U, but you certainly can. Just make sure you use a Shure app to deactivate the phantom power beforehand, since it’s on by default.)

Control your sound

What’s also great about the MVX2U Gen 2 is that it comes will all the latest Shure digital audio processing onboard. This essentially turns your trusty old XLR mic into a smart digital microphone and gives you greater control over your sound.

While Auto Level Mode keeps your gain consistent, a real-time Denoiser reduces background noise to isolate your voice, and the Digital Popper Stopper™ helps eliminate those pesky plosives.

These are all accessible via the Shure MOTIV apps. There’s one for videoaudio and MOTIV Mix™ lets you control all sorts of audio tasks, such recording, mixing and streaming. You can adjust settings such as gain, limiter, compression, EQ and your own saved presets. If you’re a podcaster or streamer, you can also quickly select your preferred tone from Dark, Natural or Bright. To use it with all your favorite apps, just set it up first with a MOTIV app, so it has all your preferred settings ready to go.

The interface is conveniently compatible with all sorts of DAWs and conferencing programs like Zoom and Teams. All you need to do is select MVX2U Gen 2 as your input device. You can even plug in your instruments with a ¼” to XLR converter cable. Everything you record will be captured in high quality 24-bit / 48kHz audio.

For those needing to monitor your audio, there’s a 3.5mm headphone jack with zero-latency that lets you hear exactly what you’re capturing. You can even set your preferred blend of monitoring and playback with Monitor Mix in the MOTIV apps.

What else is new with the Gen 2? Well, the hardworking engineers at Shure have also managed to lower the noise floor (which you’d notice with a highly sensitive mic and the gain cranked up) and improve the output of both the digital-to-analog converter and the headphone amplifier.

But it still only weighs 100 grams. So, grab yourself an MVX2U Gen 2, pop it in your travel bag and you’re good to go.
