Making a Beat with Demo Taped and an MV88
In an interview, the artist behind Demo Taped shares his experiences recording found sound with the MV88.
Demo Taped, the moniker of 18 year old Atlanta native Adam Alexander, is an Electronic Soul solo project dedicated to spreading love and good vibes. Adam strives to spread a general feeling of happiness and love through his upbeat rhythms, soft vocals, and unique synth melodies combined with dreamy, electronic R&B textures. We handed Adam an MV88 and sent him out on the road to capture sounds he encountered on his travels.
Tell us about Demo Taped and how you got started.
Adam Alexander: Demo Taped is my solo electronic pop project. On Valentine's Day 2015 I released my first EP, Heart, and right now I'm working on my next EP and my album. I really want to thank everyone who has supported me and my music.
How long have you been creating music?
AA: I've been playing music since I was about 4 and creating it since 9 or 10. I used to be really interested in making folk and singer/songwriter styles of music. I shifted to electronic music in late 2014 and started getting really serious about it in 2015.
How would you describe your style?
AA: I always tell people it's electronic pop. I'll usually then be dissatisfied with my answer and add R&B. Truth is, I don't have a definitive description of my style, but that's usually the rough genre combination I tell others.
How has the MV88 been useful in recording found sound?
AA: Using the MV88 really simplified field recording for me. It's something that is so important to my personal style, so anything that makes it simpler is pretty wonderful. It's super-easy to just have on hand anywhere, which is perfect for me because as soon as I hear something interesting, I need to record it. I've been using the MV88 for my field recordings used in my music, and the audio quality is wonderful!
Where did you come up with the idea to capture the sounds that you used for this beat?
AA: The beat was made when I travelled to California on my first tour with Vallis Alps. I recorded sounds that I encountered all over Cali and wanted to put them all together to make a song that had movement. It's sort of a journey. It also shows that anything can be musical.
