Customer Profile

The University of Bedfordshire is a modern, innovative university with a heritage of top quality education going back more than 100 years.

With over 14,000 students, including 4,500 international students, the University of Bedfordshire is recognised as ‘internationally excellent’ in the areas of Computer Science and Informatics and Business and Management Studies.

Building on this reputation, the university recently designed and completed an ambitious £40 million state-of-the-art laboratory space for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) courses, with the aim to provide students with the best learning enviroment possible, while changing the way it teaches science and technology.

Set out over four storeys and incorporating 6000m2 of floorspace, the University’s STEM building serves as ‘an icon for the town’ and will support and encourage the value of science and engineering to local schools while raising the profile of the university to the wider Bedfordshire community.

The cutting-edge facility aims to ‘capture students imaginations’ by utilising the latest virtual reality and simulation technology during lessons.

Challenge

Set out over four storeys and incorporating 6000m2 of floorspace, the University’s STEM building will also support and encourage the value of science and engineering to local schools and the wider Bedfordshire community.

Solution

Expansive, multi-functional computer laboratories across the campus incorporate Shure’s Microflex® Advance™ MXA910 IntelliMix® DSP Celling Array Microphone platform, with QLX-D® Digital Wireless systems in place for presentations from the lectures.

Dante-enabled microphones allow for operation of different lectern positions and configuration over the University network, offering an efficient and effective system that provides superior coverage across the entire space and enabled the use of Voice Lift systems across the building.

Advantages

Academics can now provide students with an unrivalled educational experience across a large environment, with the systems in place and configured to provide a unique, intimate setting, and offering an unobtrusive, natural sound.

“There’s far more lecture capture being used now,” explained Dr Paul Sant, Head of School, Computer Science and Technology at the University of Bedfordshire.
