Buying old stock M91 and M95 cartridges

Date Updated: March 2, 2018 FAQ #378
Question:
Looking for a new cartridge, I have been offered 2 discontinued Shure models (in addition to the current range) :M91-ED & M95-EJ, brand new in their original packaging. Therefore I would like to ask:1. When was each of those models produced?2. Which of the 2 is better, and what would be their equivalents in your current range?3. Do you generally recommend replacing styli with compatible (non-original) ones?
Answer:

1. From the late 1960's until the early 1980's is the closest dates we can provide.
2. The M95EJ is slightly better, but it tracks at 1.5 to 4 grams, and the M91ED tracks at .75 to 1.5 grams. The closest current equivalents are: M95EJ = M94E; M91ED = M92E.
3. We have never tested non-Shure compatible styli. As in all things: "Let the buyer beware".
