I heard that a Shure phono cartridge was placed on the Voyager Spacecraft so the onboard record could be played back. True?
Each of the two Voyager spacecraft includes a "golden record" with recorded sounds from Earth. Each spacecraft also includes a phonograph cartridge and stylus for playback of the record. There was a rumor that the cartridges were Shure. Based on NASA articles, this is not feasible as the phono cartridge is described in the articles as "ceramic." In the 1970's, Shure no longer made ceramic cartridges. It is most likely that NASA had the ceramic cartridges custom-made for the Voyager missions.
