"Rapper" style of microphone use

FAQ #2587 Updated October 23, 2008

I'm curious what effects "Rapper" style microphone use (bottom up looking down performer's throat) has on the microphone's frequency response curve. Would it be considered "on axis" or "off axis"?

The position does not affect the mic's performance that much. The mic is still on axis.

What does great "harm" is the cupping the ball of the mic with the hand. This "destroys" the polar pattern and modifies the frequency response. But it looks cool, so rappers don't appear to care what about the sonic results.
