Podcasting - recommended mic for voice

FAQ #3140 Updated January 13, 2010

Question:

I want my podcast to have the quality of an FM radio station. What mic do you recommend for my podcasting voice-over recording?

Answer:

The Shure SM7B is widely used in radio, television, and recording for voice-over artists.

The audio signal level from the SM7B is quite low, though typical for a professional voice-over mic. Therefore, the SM7B signal will likely need to be sent through a high quality microphone preamp before being sent to the computer's sound card. The preamp should have a minimum of 65 dB of gain for most podcasting setups.
