Shure in GRAMMY® Awards Spotlight

Endorsing artists, wireless systems take center stage at 46th annual music awards show

With artists ranging from Christina Aguilera to Alison Krauss in the Grammy® Awards spotlight, Shure was in the groove again in terms of both endorsing artists and technological presence.

Shure's presence at the Grammy Awards included:

  • Aguilera, who won in the Best Female Pop Vocal Performance category with her song "Beautiful", performed the song live during the televised event using a wireless UHF/SM58 microphone system.
  • Shure endorsers Alison Krauss & Union Station won in both the Best Country Instrumental Performance and Best Bluegrass Album categories. Krauss sang on a UHF/SM86 wireless system during her duet with Sarah McLachlan.
  • Another Shure endorser, Martina McBride, nominated for "This One's For The Girls" in the Best Female Country Vocal Performance category, used a hardwired SM58® during her appearance.
  • OutKast singer Andre "3000" Benjamin used a 55SH Series II microphone during their performance of "Hey Ya!" In addition, Shure wireless bodypacks also contributed to the production of the "Funk is Back" segment, which featured Earth, Wind, & Fire, OutKast's Antwan "Big Boi" Patton, Robert Randolph and the Family Band, and father-of-funk George Clinton, who was accompanied by his 16-person band, Parliament Funkadelic.
  • Shure contributed a pair of its new PA821 antenna combiners to complement the 16 PSM® 700 systems that were used for the evening's performances.
  • Shure's new, sound isolating E3c earphones were included as a gift bag item, which were given to more than 150 media, record label executives and artists.

"This was definitely a memorable night," Shure artist relations team member Ryan Smith said shortly after they rolled up the red carpet. "With our PSM 700 personal monitor systems clearly leading the way as the favored choice among performing artists and engineers, it was an excellent opportunity to showcase our new PA821 antenna combiners as well. Everything performed flawlessly. The funk segment was a triumph that won't soon be forgotten."

Shure's newly-developed eight-input PA821 active antenna combiner is a device which slashed the number of antennas needed for PSM 700 operation and significantly improved RF performance by reducing intermodulation distortion. "With the PA821 units at work, we were able to narrow down and refine the wireless transmitting frequencies via the unit's filtering, and essentially eliminate everything standing in the path of good audio," Smith added. "The resulting sound was cleaner than we've ever experienced before."

Other Shure endorsing artists nominated for Grammys included Michelle Branch (Best Female Rock Vocal Performance), Queens of the Stone Age (Best Hard Rock Performance), Korn (Best Metal Performance), and Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder, who won in the Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocal category.
